The US nonprofit sector employed more than 10.6% of the nation's workforce in 2013, yet 50% of organizations struggle financially and up to 8% are technically insolvent, writes Bruce DeBoskey. Philanthropists can combat the issue, he writes, by ensuring nonprofits have enough funding for overhead, offering less restricted funding and encouraging restructuring and mergers.
