When development staff looks for passionate mission advocates to reach out to others for support, they naturally want to harness the stories and connections of their agency’s volunteers. Far too often, program staff and even executives “protect” their volunteers from being asked to help with fundraising. That’s a nonprofit crime!
Like Elliott Ness, development staff can attack the protection racket directly or find ways to chip away at the edges. We’ll take a look at some successful strategies for breaking the protection racket in agencies like yours. Click here for a copy of the slides, and click here for a copy of the session handout.
Our speaker, Nancy Trego, has enjoyed more than 30 years’ experience in public policy nonprofit management and development. She heads her own consulting firm, which specializes in helping nonprofits move their volunteers and annual fund to the next level, and has been active as a teacher and leader in VAFRE’s P3, AFP, and the University of Richmond’s Institute on Philanthropy. Prior to opening her own firm, Nancy served as Senior Vice President for Philanthropy at the YMCA of Greater Richmond, where she lead a team that raised more than $40 million in annual, capital and endowment gifts over eight years. Locally, she also served in senior development positions for the Richmond SPCA and St. Mary’s Health Care Foundation, where she first learned to crack the volunteer protection racket. Nancy received VAFRE’s highest honor, the Nina Abady Award for career achievement, in April 2013.
