Susan Early
Interim Executive Director/Director of Development
Partnership For Families

This month, we highlight our outgoing VAFRE president. She has done an outstanding job and has positioned VAFRE well for future. Thank you, Susan!

Q: What is one skill you rely on to be successful in your fundraising role?

Listening. It’s hard to do, especially listening through silences in a conversation. But, if you can do that and pay attention to everything about the other person, you will gain a wealth of information.

Q: How has VAFRE contributed to your success?

Learning is lifelong. I have learned from the programs but mostly from VAFRE’s members. It is wonderful to have this network of knowledgeable folks to reach out to with questions or for advice. VAFRE members are generous with their time and wisdom!

Q: In 140 characters or fewer, what is your advice to others in development?

Be yourself, and don’t ever compromise your integrity to get a gift or please a donor.

Q: What would other VAFRE members be surprised to know about you?

I have a master’s degree in creative writing and still write poetry. I am fortunate to know a group of dedicated and talented writers in Richmond and enjoy taking part in both formal and informal workshops.
