The VAFRE e-news

From the President

Dear VAFRE Members,

September. No matter how old I am, it always signals a new year. As a child I loved the promise of the school year, buying school supplies and shopping for some new school clothes. With my school days long gone, now it has become more a time for reflection and engagement. So as we kick-off VAFRE’s new year of programming, I began thinking about our mission statement: VAFRE is an inclusive membership organization devoted to providing educational programming, networking opportunities, and recognition for the nonprofit development professional.

  • Inclusive membership organization – All experience levels, all organization sizes – everyone is welcome.
  • Educational programming – Regular monthly meetings, September through June, and brown bag lunches during the summer.
  • Networking opportunities – Before each meeting, over lunch and at our socials.
  • Recognition for the nonprofit development professional – Two awards given each year – the Rising Star Award and the Nina Abady Award.

What does our mission statement mean to you? It makes me excited and proud to be part of VAFRE and the work it does to promote our profession and professional development. If you feel the same, please jump in:

  • Join a committee. Communications, Programs, Membership and Awards can use your help on a regular basis or as a one-off.
  • Bring a guest to a luncheon and then encourage him/her to become a member.
  • Nominate someone for the Rising Star or Nina Abady Award.

If you have other ideas for how you would like to be involved, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any of the other Board members.

Thank you!

Susan Early

Upcoming Programs

Our upcoming program on Tuesday, October 7 is Getting to Know YOUR Community Foundation with Molly Bittner, Vice President of Philanthropic Services at The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia.

What is a Community Foundation?  How do they benefit the community and non-profit organizations?  Why are they important?  How could you collaborate with a Community Foundation?  Molly Dean Bittner and colleagues at The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia and the Partnership for Nonprofit Excellence will answer these questions and more during their presentation. The presentation will be followed by a short Q& A session about The Community Foundation. Come out for lunch and an interesting insight about this topic.
