Dear VAFRE Members,

Susan Early

Member Q&A:

Harry H. Warner, Jr.,
Senior Consulting Associate,
West Avenue Associates

Q: What is one skill you rely on to be successful in your fundraising role?

Just the mere role of a development professional connotes possessing multiple skills to be successful. One I have relied upon is the ability to communicate – both verbally and in writing – whether to an individual or to a mass audience, which has been essential to my success.

Q: How has VAFRE contributed to your success?

In a word, I would say effectiveness. Read more...

Upcoming Programs

Join us on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 for The Power of the Positive No with Jean Gasen, Ph.D., PCC, Executive Director of the Center for Corporate Education at Virginia Commonwealth University and President of JB Gasen and Associates.

No.  Just two little letters – N. O.  And yet, isn’t it amazing that ‘No’ can be one of the most difficult words to say, just when we need to say it most? This one word has the power to profoundly transform our lives for the better, when we understand the underlying Yes that creates our No’s. As Gandhi once said : “A ‘No’ uttered from deepest conviction is better and greater than a ‘Yes’ merely uttered to please, or what is worse, to avoid trouble.”

During this lunch, Jean will discuss how to say no in a way that reinforces your values and keeps your sanity, while still reaffirming the relationships with those around you who depend on you to say Yes (and No). Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to create more Positive No’s in their work and life, and will have at least one opportunity to practice saying No using this framework.

Start your new year right! Mark your calendar for January 6, 2015 when Andrea Goulet Ford, Founder and Chief Message Architect of BrandVox, chats with us about Copywriting Strategies for Fundraising Success. This luncheon session will focus on exploring copywriting - the art and science of using words to encourage action.  Andrea will walk us through her top strategies for creating compelling communications.
