From the President 

Dear VAFRE Members -

Happy New Year! For many of us July marks the beginning of a new fiscal year. I hope that you ended your year with all of your goals met and exceeded!

This also marks my first message as VAFRE’s new president for 2015-2016. A big thanks is owed to Susan Early for the extraordinary work that she did as last year’s president. I have been handed the reins of a strong organization, thanks to her leadership.  

I hope that you are taking some time this summer to rest and reflect on the year just finished and the opportunities for the year ahead. One opportunity that you may want to explore is VAFRE’s Professional Partnership Program, or P3. P3 is VAFRE’s newest initiative, and one of the most exciting. In P3, a team of two or more highly seasoned and experienced volunteer leaders guide small groups of five to seven up-and-coming Development professionals of all skill and experience levels. These partner groups meet all year long, and develop their own areas of interest for discussion. 

Last month I had the chance to meet and celebrate the second graduating class of P3.  Mentors and team members alike spoke enthusiastically of the bonds that had been formed, and the variety of helpful topics that had been explored throughout the year. Registration is now open for this year’s P3 class. Whatever your level of experience, I think it is definitely something worth exploring. Visit the VAFRE website to learn more.

Registration Open for Professional Partnership Program (P3) 

Stimulating. Provocative. Eye-opening. Fun. Encouraging. Levelling. Amazing.

These are a few of the words used to describe VAFRE’s Professional Partnership Program (P3) by the 2014-2015 participants. Enrollment is now open for the 2015-2016 P3, and with two years under our belts, the VAFRE Board has incorporated many of the suggestions of participants and leaders to continue improving the program. So, strap on your seatbelt and join us for this year’s ride! You can download the application on the VAFRE website, complete it and return it to Mary Kidd at admin@vafre.org by August 17th.

What is P3?

The purpose of P3 is to provide an annual opportunity for VAFRE members to develop more extensive professional skills. A team of two or more highly seasoned and experienced volunteer Leaders will guide small groups of approximately five to seven people (the Participants).  

What makes P3 so unique?

Participants will complete an application form that provides information about their professional goals. In addition participants will be encouraged to identify specific areas of interest...(read more program details).

Upcoming Programs 

Join us at our Brown Bag session at Greater Richmond ARC on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 for the final session of our Professional Growth Sessions over the summer. Our previous session involved discussions about networking effectively and developing our professional relationships. The topic of our upcoming session is What is the Value of
Professional Development?
   

We will feature a panel along with additional guests, such as Katie Botha (Vice President, Development & Communications, Special Olympics Virginia) and Christine Holland (Learning Institute Coordinator, Commonwealth Autism) in attendance and possibly others, to discuss the perspectives and perceptions of professional development, how staff and organizations benefit from it and why it is important to support to provide these opportunities to staff. 

Our panelists for this session are:

  • Kathy Laing – Program Manager, Institute on Philanthropy – University of Richmond, School of Professional & Continuing Studies

  • Eleanor Sharp – Senior Program Manager, Nonprofit Learning Point – Partnership for Nonprofit Excellence

  • Nancy Stutts, Ph.D. – Associate Professor; Interim Chair – VCU’s L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Master of Public Administration Program

  • Nancy Trego, CFRE – President, Trego Third Sector Solutions

The panel discussion will be moderated by James Wasilewski.

Following the panel conversation and Q&A will be a brief networking session amongst attendees.  At the conclusion of the program, a brief tour of Greater Richmond ARC will be offered for those who are interested.

Location: Greater Richmond ARC is located at 3600 Saunders Avenue, Richmond, Virginia 23227.  Parking is available in the front of the building.  Please use the front entrance.

Nominations for National Philanthropy Day honorees are now open! You can nominate someone you know that has made a true impact on the quality of life, cultural vibrancy, and fabric of the region. The 2015 celebration will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2015 at 12 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel and Spa Short Pump

AFP Central Virginia invites ALL interested parties to submit an application to honor individuals, corporations, foundations, and volunteers who personify the philanthropic culture of our region.

Nominations will be considered in the following categories:

Virginia Grants Conference

On September 28-29, 2015, the Central Virginia Chapter of the Grant Professionals Association is hosting the Virginia Regional Grants Conference in Charlottesville. This conference is for new and seasoned grant writers and managers. Workshop topics include Grant Writing 101, evaluation, logic models, grants management, tips from foundation staff, and how to use data.
