Topic: Fundraising Strategies: Lessons from Barack Obama’s Campaign  

This session will examine fundraising techniques in the 2008 presidential campaign, with particular emphasis on Barack Obama’s fundraising operation. As the first candidate to refuse public financing in both the primary and general election campaigns, Obama’s fundraising machine was unprecedented. How did it work? And, what does it mean for the future of fundraising in presidential elections?

Speaker: Daniel J. Palazzolo, Ph.D., is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Richmond, where he teaches courses on American politics, Campaigns and Elections, and Public Policy. He has authored two books, as well as numerous articles and book chapters, and is the co-editor of Election Reform: Politics and Policy. Dr. Palazzolo frequently provides political analysis on WWBT/NBC 12, has been a guest on various radio stations, including National Public Radio, and has been cited in a variety of national and local internet and print news publications. He is also Director of the Center for Government and Policy and Coordinator of the DC Initiative at the University of Richmond.
