Message from the President
Last week at Northstar Academy, we held our annual faculty vs. students basketball game. It is a highlight of the year and everyone, especially the students, gets super amped up. Our mini pep-rally began at 2:00 with pep squad, player introductions and, of course, our mascot, Navi the Navigator. The game began at 2:15 with a full house of cheering fans!.
Around 1:55, I glanced at my desk and all I could see were half finished projects, emails that needed a response and reports that needed to be written. I pushed myself away from my desk and headed to the gym. For about 45 minutes, I was fully in the moment, immersed in the heartbeat of our school, watching parents watch their children on our no cut squad where every student has playing time.
One of our youngest students, and certainly the very smallest, stole the ball and positioned himself near the foul line where he tossed up an underhanded throw and the result was "nothin' but net"! As you can imagine, the place erupted with whistles, cheers and high fives. I will never forget the shining face of that young man - pure joy and pride. The only thing that might have matched it was the look on his dad's face. It took me a minute to realize I had tears streaming down my face.
Then it was time to head back to my desk - with my to do list right where I left it.
Here are my thoughts to share in this new year: We will always have unfinished projects, email to return and reports to write. Certainly, these are important but let's remember that, every so often, we need to push ourselves away from our desks, immerse ourselves with those whom we serve and take the pulse on what it's really all about. It is invigorating, affirming and so very precious.
