Message from the President
Happy February! The groundhog didn’t see a shadow, so here’s to an early spring and much more this year.
We were fortunate to host a session this month about career mapping for a fulfilling and successful career with Susan Brock Wilkes, Ph.D. and Lisa Freeman, CFRE. We appreciate the structure and questions to consider as well as the case study of our friend ELF in her career. We may not always be able to predict the future of our career paths, but we sure can influence it and evolve with it.
Please hold March 5 on your calendars for our next session about When Donors Get Too Close - Sexual Harassment and the Development Professional in the Age of #metoo with featured speaker Whitney Fogg, SHRM-CP who has over fifteen years of experience in Human Resources providing guidance to both non-profit and for-profit organizations. She will lead a discussion in learning how to establish and helping your staff to establish respectful boundaries and manage uncomfortable situations in your interactions on behalf of your organization.
Improv Time: I’ve Got Your Back
Backstage before every performance, my fellow improvisers and I say to each other - “I’ve got your back.” We already know that we will support each other and work together as a team to have the best performance we can together; regardless, we affirm this commitment.
Consider if we told our colleagues, our board members, our donors and the beneficiaries of our work - “We’ve got your back.” Would they feel supported? Do they feel supported? Do they have the same commitment to you and your organization? Once this commitment has been made and proven consistently over time, an environment of mutual trust will exist with a solid foundation.

Our speaker will be Talley Baratka, founder of Impact 100 Richmond, a collective giving organization with more than 300 women investing over $1 million in Richmond since 2009. Talley currently leads the Business Strategy Team at Rhudy & Co. In her most recent corporate role, she led Capital One's grant-making and volunteer programs in Richmond.

Board Nominations Sought
The VAFRE Nominating Committee is seeking nominations to fill vacant positions for the Board of Directors for the 2019/2020 fiscal year. Now is the time to take your membership to the next level and make a commitment to VAFRE or to nominate someone else for the Board. Your nominations are needed by Wednesday, February 28, 2019. Each nominee will receive a Candidate Interest Form that must be completed to be considered for a position by the Nominating Committee.
Eligibility and Term of Office: To be a director, you must be a member, in good standing. Each elected Director shall take office on July 1, 2019 for a two-year term and is responsible for, along with other Board members, determining VAFRE policies and supporting the mission of the organization. Time commitment includes board meeting the first Tuesday of every other month and the time needed to complete the tasks of your board role.
