| Message from the President Happy April! The warm weather is finally here - hopefully for seasonal good. I don’t think I will trust the groundhog again - early spring? Right….. Thank you to those of you who were able to help us celebrate our profession and outstanding individuals on April 16 at The Woman's Club at the Bolling Haxall House. Congratulations again to our 2019 Nina Abady and Rising Star Award winners - Gayle Haglund, CFRE with Westminster Canterbury Richmond and Amy Clark Garmon, CFRe with ChildSavers! We were elevated by the words of our keynote speaker Talley Baratka, Founder and Chief Ideas Officer for Lightbulb Labs. Let’s all consider the impact we make and inspire others to make every day. Mark your calendars for the May session - Donor Advised Funds: Changing How Donors Give. This is another special 2-hour session (2 hours of CFRE credit) featuring a two-part panel moderated by Ellen Spong, Senior VP and Director of the Institutional Advisory Group, Union Bank. Our panelists and participants will explore how we, as fundraisers, can position our organizations to maximize contributions from donor advised funds - a trend taxpayers are proactively adopting following the federal tax reform enacted in 2017 increasing filers’ standard deduction. Prior to lunch, we are hosting panelists Molly Dean Bittner, Senior VP, Philanthropic Services, The Community Foundation for a Greater Richmond and Brad Shiveley, Vice President, Capital Management Corp., and after lunch, we will have Lionel Bacon, Vice President of Philanthropy, Virginia Home for Boys and Girls and Cheryl Guedri, Community Volunteer. Improv Time: A couple of inspirational quotes “Don’t expect great things. Already know that it’s great and match it.” Billy Merritt, UCB-NY “Start with a Yes, and see where it takes you.” Tina Fey, The Second City-Chicago And here we go... James James Wasilewski, VAFRE President P.S. Come join VAFRE for our Spring Social on May 23rd from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at ChildSavers. Network with colleagues and share some stories! ______________________ Congratulations to our Award Winners! On Tuesday, April 16th, VAFRE members and guests came together to celebrate and recognize the two amazing individuals that were selected as our award winners this year:
