Message from the President
Happy Thanksgiving! This season always reminds me to count my blessings. I'm grateful to say that there are many. One of my blessings has been the opportunity to be part of VAFRE for over 15 years now. Honestly, the time has flown by. I have met so many fabulous colleagues, learned so much, and truly been honored to take on a leadership role on our Board of Directors. What a privilege!
Just last week I had the opportunity to share an afternoon with two close professional colleagues - we have shared advice and encouragement through the good times and some bad times, too. I also had coffee with one of our newest VAFRE members. These two meetings really highlighted the broad spectrum of experiences I've had through VAFRE. Each and every one of us adds something unique to the mix!
I'm also grateful for our new partnership with AFP. In order to help advance the understanding and awareness of fundraising as a profession, we have opened up the Nina Abady and Rising Star Awards to members of both VAFRE and AFP in 2020! Award nominations will open next month and be due in January - please stay tuned for more details. Recognition of our award winners will happen at both the VAFRE Awards Luncheon and the AFP National Philanthropy Day celebrations next year!
So, as we gather with friends and loved ones during the coming holidays, please know that one of the things that I am grateful for is you and our wonderful VAFRE community!
Jennifer O’Rourke, CFRE, VAFRE President
Our December 3rd Program, The Secrets of Managing Up, is a special 2-hour program (approved for CFRE credit) that will reveal how you can consciously work with your boss in order to obtain the best possible results for you, your boss and your company. To help our presenter prepare, please take five minutes to let us know what kind of manager you have and what challenges you face in working with this individual or group: take our quick survey.
The member fee for this special program is still just $20 (no additional fee for Season Pass holders)!
Dr. Michael Moody, a national expert and sought-after commentator on family philanthropy, offered insights into the rising generation of major donors and other emerging trends that promise to fundamentally transform the practice of family giving in the years to come during the National Philanthropy Day Workshop on November 14th. Building on his best-selling co-authored book, Generation Impact: How Next Gen Donors Are Revolutionizing Giving (winner of the AFP/Skystone Partners Research Prize), Dr. Moody discussed what we can expect as influential new donors, and new ways of giving, emerge in our community. He also offered practical suggestions for how fundraisers, families, and others can best take advantage of these coming changes. A panel discussion followed with Becky Massey, Nancy Belleman, and Pamela Royal, MD.
