Message from the President

The Fall is upon us.  We are now ready for the leaves to change color.  As we prepared for the change of the season, I hope you had the opportunity to join us on October 6th for our Board Diversity, Recruitment and Culture Lunch-In.  Lisa Freeman led us through a wonderful discussion between an Executive Director and a Board Chair on how to deliberately build a board with diversity in mind.

We learned how to be diversity minded as we build our boards and how we should embrace the future.  It is always a great thing when we have an occasion to adopt something new. Members, if you weren't able to join us, log-in to access the webinar recording on the Members Only page of the website.

This is also a great time to mention our kick-off for our P3 (Professional Partnership Program).  We have three great teams of mentors this year:

  • Sam Davis, III and Bess Littlefield,
  • Shawn Morrison and Barbara Wells, and
  • Maureen Neal, CFRE, and David Thomason, and Barbara Wells.

The P3 program runs from October 1 to May 31.

Fundraising Tip of the Month: Gather Information
You need to learn as much about your donors as you can. Once you do, you can begin to understand what compelled them to contribute to your organization in the first place. This will allow you to gain insight into how to attract future donors.

See you at our next virtual lunch-in on November 10th.

Scholarship Fund Renamed to Honor Past President

When Susan Early, 2014-2015 VAFRE President, passed away at the end of April, it hit a lot of VAFRE members very hard. Since she moved to Richmond in 1993, Susan had an enormous impact on the nonprofits and development professionals in the community and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

After serving as the Director of Development at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond for nearly a decade, she went on to establish the fundraising program at Partnership for Families as their first Director of Development. Then, her years of experience in development and capacity building ultimately led her to a consulting career that gave her the opportunity to work with various organizations and foundations in the Richmond community.

In recognition of the role she played in both VAFRE and the greater Richmond nonprofit community, the VAFRE Board of Directors has voted to name the VAFRE scholarship fund the Susan Early Scholarship Fund. The fund is available to new and renewing VAFRE members to cover the cost of their dues – something that could be crucial to their ongoing professional development in these turbulent times. To apply for a scholarship, follow the link in the member application or, for current members, follow the link on the Members Only page.

Reminder: Webinar Recordings on Members Only Page

Did you have to miss this month's Lunch-In, or did your dog start barking and keep you from hearing THE most important point of the entire program? Members can access recordings of all of VAFRE's webinars on the Member Only Resources page of the website, just log in and follow the link to see what you missed. The page also has links to slides and handouts from several years' worth of programs with a lot of ideas that still apply today, even in our new normal.

Reminder: Options for Your Dues

Don't forget, VAFRE now has the option to pay your dues quarterly instead of all at once when you join or renew.  When completing your application or renewal, simply select the appropriate membership category with Recurring Payments to be billed $31.25 every three months instead of $125.00 all at once.
