Don't Forget to Sign Up: VAFRE Affinity Groups

One of the greatest things about our Association is the opportunity to meet and network with fellow fundraisers in our region. VAFRE Affinity Groups are discussion forums and listservs targeted to specific interests within the fundraising field. Choose to join one or more groups that most interest you or relate to your career. You'll have the opportunity to ask questions from members, share new ideas and best practices, meet members in your field or connect to those you've already met, and create virtual meet-ups.

Members, log in and select from groups dedicate to Annual Funds, Grant Writing & Reporting, Small Shop Fundraising and more.

Need Help with Your Dues?

The Susan Early Scholarship Fund is available to new and renewing VAFRE members to cover the cost of your dues. To apply for a scholarship, follow the link in the member application or, for current members, follow the link on the Members Only page.

Message from the President

Spring is on the way. We had a late start with snow, ice, and power outages. Now we are ready for the flowers to start to bloom. Look at this new season as an opportunity to look at everything with a new eye. Give a new sprucing up to your stewardship touches. Give a new scent to virtual events. Pull the weeds out of your direct mail appeals. Fertilize your donor database or prospect pool.

VAFRE will be here as your gardener. Use the resources we have to offer.  Check out our affinity groups. Use our resources tab on our website. Join a committee.

And of course, join us on Tuesday, April 6th for our virtual lunch-in Introduction to Community-Centric Fundraising. This important program about a movement grounded in equity and social justice is cosponsored by the Central Virginia Chapter of AFP and registration is available to everyone at no cost.

Fundraising Tip of the Month: Never, Ever Surprise Your Prospect

If your potential donor is ever surprised, you are asking them for money, something is deeply amiss.

Make it clear in your first call or contact that you are interested in talking to them about your cause and how they might be able to get involved. Make it clear that, while you are interested in them as a person, there is a deeper purpose for your visit. That way, they will be able to prepare their response, objections, and questions.

In-Person vs. Virtual Events - Member Poll Results

Last month the VAFRE Board of Directors polled the membership for a second time regarding their comfort level with the idea of live events beginning in the fall of 2021. As was to be expected given the ever evolving pandemic situation, the results were much more mixed than the results from the poll we conducted last fall.

Of 82 VAFRE members responding, 39 responded that they would still prefer virtual events in the fall, while 25 would prefer in-person events and 18 had no preference. When asked about potential meal options, 38 respondents indicated that they would prefer boxed lunches, while 16 would prefer no food to be served and only 4 indicated they would prefer a plated lunch.

The disruption created by the pandemic has allowed VAFRE the opportunity to reimagine how we meet. The Board is considering the poll results and looking into alternatives for our future programs, including offering hybrid in-person events with a virtual element for those who are unable or unwilling to attend in-person.
