I hope you are all enjoying the last of the summer weather and not stressing too badly about your year end appeals. I for one am looking forward to some cooler temperatures, and I am very hopeful for the Community Tax Law Project's year end push.
For those of you who were able to join us for September's excellent luncheon with the always informative and entertaining Randy Howard, I cannot thank you enough. This was our first attempt at our new hybrid meeting approach, and I have to admit I was very nervous. Having a long time friend of VAFRE such as Randy as a speaker plus the amazing pre-production efforts of Mary Kidd, Sara Higgins, Leigh Busby, Will Glasco, and Nikkia Johnson made the whole event a success.
While we view the event as a success, VAFRE is always striving to offer our members the best in fundraising educational and networking opportunities, so please give us your feedback.
During Mr. Howard's talk, he used the analogy of driving a car where fundraisers are known to be "pressing the gas" while the finance department is known for "pressing the brake," creating two seemingly opposing forces. I thought that Randy's analogy was worth exploring further. Obviously, our organizations are the vehicle, but how does our mission fit into Randy's model? More importantly, can a strong mission ease the tension between the gas and the brake? I think our mission acts as our trip guide, keeping us on the right track as well as moving forward for our intended purpose. Focusing on our mission should prevent us from frolicking on unnecessary detours. Our mission should also help our team understand that along our path, we will need to both progress along our path (i.e. to press the gas) as well as press the brake at times (.ie. to prevent us from crashing). With the mission as the focus, it seems that neither the fundraiser nor the finance person should be surprised or upset by the others actions, so long as those actions are mission directed. I thank Randy for a very thought provoking analogy. How is your mission "vehicle" doing?
I hope you are all able to join us again in October for what we hope is going to be an equally thought provoking luncheon with Howard Hoege from the Mariner's Museum in Newport News, where Howard will share with us his social capital approach he adopted for the Museum. I have had the pleasure of hearing Howard speak, and he will not disappoint.Thank you all again for being part of VAFRE, especially as we continue to navigate these uncharted times. This organization is amazing because of each and every one of our members.
