AFP Meeting - Creating Positive Change in the Community through Advocacy

  • Wednesday, February 24, 2016
  • 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM
  • YMCA Downtown, 2 West Franklin Street, Richmond, VA 23220

Is advocacy the same as government relations?  How is one Richmond organization using advocacy tactics to further its mission?  Is it fundable?

Join the AFP Central Virginia Chapter for an engaging discussion with the Sports Backers as we learn from their successful work in the community promoting Bike Walk RVA-a regional program to support bike- and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure projects.

Max Buchanan (Bike Walk RVA Director), Cindy DiCello (Development Manager), and a Bike Walk RVA Academy volunteer will walk us through:

  • What advocacy is and why your organization might want to engage in advocacy efforts
  • Examples and stories of how Sports Backers has used community outreach and education to promote the Bike Walk RVA program
  • How they are working to fund their advocacy efforts

Our guests will answer all of our questions about this sometimes mysterious world of nonprofit advocacy. They'll also facilitate group discussions as we all think through why and how our organizations might take our advocacy efforts to the next level or how we can advocate for the importance of fundraising as a profession.

Registration is $10 for AFP members and $15 for nonmembers

 8am - 8:30am: Networking & light breakfast
