Our Speakers

Brydon M. DeWitt, President of DeWitt & Associates, Inc., has been an educator and development professional for over 40 years.  As a consultant, he has provided guidance in building stronger development programs and successful capital campaigns for colleges and universities, independent schools, health care and retirement institutions, social service agencies, cultural and religious organizations throughout the United States.  He has also taught courses for Virginia Commonwealth University, the University of Richmond – Office of Community and Professional Education, Institute on Philanthropy, and the University of Virginia (guest lecturer).  He is the editor and principal author of the firm’s educational quarterly, The Development Companion.  In September 2012, the firm began publishing The Nonprofit Companion, a monthly newsletter especially for CEO’s and Board members of nonprofit organizations.  Brydon is the author of The Nonprofit Development Companion: A Workbook for Fundraising Success and recently co-authored a book with his co-presenters entitled Joystick: Guiding and Managing Your Nonprofit Business.

Louis M. Markwith, Vice President of DeWitt & Associates, Inc., is an experienced development professional with a broad knowledge of nonprofit management including, staff leadership, volunteer board involvement, recruitment, motivation and retention of volunteers, fund-raising, fiscal management and government/community relations.  He began his development career in 1974 at the University of Richmond and has been the chief development officer of such institutions as Gallaudet University, Longwood University, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and administered five foundations. He also served as the chief executive officer of the National Kidney Foundation of the Virginias.  Lou conducted consulting assignments with organizations such as Big Brother & Big Sisters, the Children's Home Society of Virginia and Atlanta Prison Ministries.  Major, USAR (Retired). 

Thomas G. McCarty, Ph.D., CFRE, Senior Counsel to DeWitt & Associates, Inc., has 40 years’ experience in serving nonprofit organizations as a staff member, consultant, and independent contractor throughout the eastern United States.  His career has encompassed 16 capital campaigns, solicitation of 6 and 7 figure major and planned gifts, and he has secured foundation grants ranging as high as $3.5 million.  His service to the profession includes board memberships and officer positions in the Central Florida, Western New York, and Central Virginia chapters of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).  He also served as President of the Central Florida Chapter of the National Planned Giving Council and as Chair of the AFP Virginia Caucus, which offers the Virginia Fund Raising Institute each year.  A former college professor, Tom is a graduate of Oberlin College, with advanced degrees from Yale University and The University of Michigan.

In order to keep lunch costs low for our members and guests, Jefferson Lakeside is unable to accommodate special dietary requests beyond the gluten free and vegetarian options listed and is unable to make last minute substitutions of one meal for the other.

Cost to attend

$20 for members (no additional fee for Season Pass holders), $25 for nonmembers employed by a member organization, and $30 for nonmember guests. Fees support program costs and administration. Registrations should be received by end of day November 29th.

Cancellation Policy

Credits for a future meeting or refunds will be given if notification of cancellation is received at VAFRE’s office prior to noon on the Thursday before a regular Tuesday meeting. If cancellation is received after the Thursday before a regular Tuesday meeting, credits and refunds will be given at the discretion of the Management Company based on the number of late registrations received. In the event of illness or an emergency, credits or refunds may be granted at the discretion of the Management Company.
