            From the President

            Dear Friends and Colleagues,

There’s nothing quite like National Philanthropy Day to inspire us in our work! At the seminar at Virginia State University, Birgit Smith Burton spoke about “accidental fundraisers” and how many folks come into this job from different paths and perspectives. We don’t all plan on being development professionals initially, but once you get into it, the impact we have on communities throughout Virginia and the world is amazing.

I also recently heard a presenter discuss imposter syndrome and ways to null that feeling of “should I really be here?” It’s not just words of affirmation to yourself that help. Look externally to confirm you’re where you should be. How is your job making a difference for your organization, community and the world? What successes can you give yourself credit for?

At VAFRE, we hope to continue to cultivate a community of folks elevating the profession and providing spaces to brainstorm and vent. We have so much work to do, but together, we make it possible. Many thanks to all who attended our recent social events at Brambly Park in Richmond, The Bradbury in Charlottesville, the kickoff of this year’s P3 class, and the virtual new member orientation: not to mention the amazing session on using AI in grant writing. We hope you enjoyed these unique networking opportunities with your peers!

The VAFRE board of directors meets towards the end of November, and we’ll be sure to provide an update to the membership based on our discussions and planning for 2024. We have a vibrant, committed board of talented folks putting together innovative projects and programs for next year. Stay tuned!

Thank you again for all you do. Many of us are accidental fundraisers, but we’re certainly glad you’re here!

            Will Glasco
            VAFRE President
